Bangladesh inherited its present structure of municipal administration from the British colonial administration. The Paurashavas constitutes an important part of the whole administrative system of government. Realising the importance of urban administration, the government has constituted municipal corporation in four major cities and passed various ordinances and acts in this regard such as the Local Government Ordinance, 1976, the Paurashava Ordinance, 1977, the Dhaka Municipal Corporation Ordinance, 1983, the Chittagong Municipal Corporation Ordinance, 1982, The Khulna Municipal Corporation Ordinance, 1984, the Rajshahi Municipal Corporation Ordinance, 1987.
