THE entrance to the kalari is through a low door facing east. The seven steps of knowledge are in the southwest corner; there is a god in every cardinal direction, making it ‘a holy place, where a greater reality can be found.’2 The centre is empty, weapons line the periphery – long sticks, short sticks, the otta, double-curved like a spine, the mace, daggers, swords and battered shields, spears, weapons from a time when you looked your opponent in the eye.
