All the time His wife: portrayals of first ladies in the Israeli press - 2002 - p.129-42. - Jan
The framing of Israeli First Ladies is discussed through an analysis of the Israeli press coverage of the wives of the past four Prime Ministers. Three principal frames emerge: First Ladies were presented as having been rescued by "Prince Charming"; they were first and foremost family women sacrificing their private lives for their husbands' careers; they gave up their own careers as part of this devotion and chose to spend their time in charitable engagements, keeping a perfect home, and in leisure activities while their husbands were doing the `important' work. Through out, they maintained a presentable young appearance as they escorted their husbands to public events and maintained a complicated relationship with the media. Understanding the construction of First Ladies in the Israch press is discussed within the general status of women in Israeli, the particular role women play in the political arena and their glorified images as mothers of the collective-nation and queens of the private sphere. - Reproduced.
