India’s g20 presidency: Pushes global economy ensures space for global South The Indian G20 Presidency is going to end soon with several firsts as it closes in the next few weeks. As the Prime Minister said, Indian diplomacy has touched new heights with the successful completion of the G20 Presidency. Unlike earlier Summits, the New Delhi Summit has given a new lease of life to
G20. Since the Italian Presidency, the interests and avenues for engagements have been waning away, which the Delhi Summit has reset in a way. The grouping would rename itself with the addition of the African Union becoming the 21st member. After almost a decade, development has returned to the central stage, which South Korea sincerely tried in 2011 when the Sherpa track got added to the finance track. India hosted the G20 Leaders’ Summit on 9-10 September 2023, bringing together the G20 Heads of State and Government1 on the theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. India assumed the G20 Presidency in the backdrop of a disturbing world geopolitical divide.
Undeterred by the gloomy geopolitical situation, India clearly outlined its G20 Presidency priorities. Led by the PM himself, the presidency adopted a four- pronged strategy. First, it exhibited a clear vision that is inclusive and pragmatic. Second, a negotiation strategy that was a mix of flexibility and assertiveness could protect India from geopolitical fault lines. Third, robust outreach, communication and dissemination strategy. Fourth, ensuring peoples’ participation in Jan Bhagidari within the country and engaging Global South at the global level. – Reproduced
