N. Panikkar (1936–2026) : Contributions to historiography and intellectual legacy - Economic & Political Weekly - 61(13), Mar 28, 2026: p.20-23

It is a painful yet solemn responsibility for me, as a student of K N Panikkar, to write an obituary for him. I seek to temper my grief by using this sad occasion as an opportunity for academic reflection on his historiographical contributions and intellectual legacy. The passing of Panikkar (widely known in academic circles simply as K N) marks the loss of one of the most influential historians of modern India. K N belonged to the generation that fundamentally restructured Indian historiography in the decades after independence. For over half a century, K N’s scholarship, teaching, and public interventions helped redefine how historians approached colonial society, popular protest, and the complex relationship between culture and politics.-Reproduced
