This Note explores the potential of Gandhian principles to address the challenges faced by contemporary democracies. It examines core Gandhian concepts such as popular sovereignty, non-violent dissent (Satyagraha and Ahimsa) and decentralised power (Swaraj). The note then analyses how these principles can be applied to strengthen democratic practices in areas such as citizen participation, ethical governance and economic justice. It also explores the relevance of Gandhian ideas in the context of global challenges. Finally, the note discusses the Porto Alegre Participatory Budgeting (PB) initiative in Brazil as a case study of how Gandhian values can be incorporated into democratic policy and planning. It concludes with a call to action, urging readers to engage with Gandhian ideas and work towards building a more just and peaceful world.- Reproduced
