India’s disaster profile has undergone a significant transformation in the past decade due to the intensifying climate extremes, fragile Himalayan systems, rapid urbanisation, and emerging techno-industrial risks. The Disaster Management (Amendment) Act, 2025 seeks to address this changing risk landscape by strengthening institutional mechanisms, decentralised response systems, and disaster data infrastructures. This article examines the act’s key provisions and argues that it marks a shift from relief-centric approaches towards anticipatory, science-based, and development-oriented disaster governance aimed at enhancing India’s long-term resilience.- Reproduced
