In June 2007, China’s tenth national people’s congress adopted major reform of the labour market regulation system the labor contact law (LCL). On paper, the law is remarkably protective and rigid by international standards. Resisting the trend toward labor market flexibility elsewhere in the world, it strengthens dismissal protection, requires working units to pay employees social insurance premiums, and stipulates stiff penalties for enterprises that violate labor contracts. – Reproduced
