Burning inequality, caste, cremation labour, and occupational health among the Dom community of Varanasi - Social Science in Perspective - 18(2), Apr-Jun, 2026: p. 157-168

This paper examines the structural relationship between caste, occupation, and health by focusing on the Dom community engaged in cremation labour in Varanasi District. Uttar Pradesh. Although cremation work occupies a central place within Hindu ritual life and religious economy, the Dom community remains socially marginalized and disproportionately exposed to service occupational health risks. The paper argues that the health vulnerabilities of Dom cremation works must be understood not as individual misfortune or occupational accident but as structurally produced outcomes of caste based labour assignment. – Reproduced
