Jawaharlal Nehru, both as a nationalist leader and as India's first Prime Minister has a special place in Indian history. As a post colonial intellectual as well as a statesman, he had the unique opportunity of elaborating a historical project - that of shaping the political and economic destiny of India. He was particularly responsible for the shape, emphasis and content of the State-centred heavy industrialisation, and a mixed economy model that was to be India's vehicle towards the journey to economic prosperity. The first part of this paper argues that the genesis of that choice was in the hybrid location of Nehru's cultural values and that the choice had been made years before independence. The second part of the paper argues that the emphasis of the planning process in the Nehru years, as visible in the first three Five Year Plans, was on industrial development rather than on agriculture. The third part of the paper analyses the impact of Nehru's economic policies on the developmental process in India. - Reproduced.
