Summary, etc. Cities have always been centre of economic activities, attracting population from the lower hierarchy towns and settlements. Rapid urbanisation in cities is resulting in concentration of poor population living in unhygienic environment. Slum population also contributes to economy, in terms of supply of cheap labour for various sectors of economy. Hence, urbanisation and slums proliferation have become integral parts of economic process. In urban areas, to achieve sustainable development, millennium development targets have been set up addressing pressing issues of poverty, provision of basic services, education, etc. focusing poor population. In slums, besides poverty, another major issue is unhygienic environment due to inadequate infrastructure including poor sanitary and drinking water facilities. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 7, target 10 focuses on reduction of share of population un-served by the water supply and sanitation to less than 50 per cent. The article examines existing urban scenario of water and sanitation focusing urban slums of million plus cities of Punjab. In end, government initiatives in form of various plans and programmes focusing on infrastructure provision in slums is given. - Reproduced.
