Corruption is ubiquitous and has many forms. It is akin to cancer and corrodes democratic institutions. The public confidence in administration gets a rude shock by the misdeeds of a few civil servants who amass wealth by illegal means. Instead of serving in the public interest they work in their personal interest. Corruption grows in those environments where there is laxity of control, thin accountability and opportunities for abuse of power are many. Greed is the basic motivating force for officials indulging in corruption. Often the public without any morals aid and abet the spread of corruption by dangling the `carrots' before the greedy civil servants |
