Even though the Plan of Action to be adopted by the UN Conference on Human Settlements will not be binding on the member countries, it would help to demarcate the problems of housing and to view human settlements as an integral part of overall development. The concept of habitat has become multidimensional involving an integrated approach comprising health, sanitation, employment, etc. Stressing the need to encourage participation by the beneficiaries to promote self-help housing schemes, the author says that the active participation of women in all stages is essential to make the global strategy for shelter a reality. - Reproduced |
