This paper highlights the immediate impact of liberalisation on work, worklessness and earnings in Mumbai. It is based on the 43rd and 50th Survey Rounds on Employment and Unemployment of the NSSO's State Sample. When the Indian economy was liberalised it was predicted that liberalisation would play havoc with the labour markets in the country. The data from the NSSO do not corroborate most of these dismal predictions. There was no evidence of distress sale of female and child labour. Work participation of men, women and children declined but so did unemployment. Informal sector expanded but real wages improved particularly of women, casual workers and the uneducated relatively to those of men, regular workers and the educated, respectively. The gap between the myth and reality of liberalisation could be largely attributed to the absence of a comprehensive and statistically representative study of the labour market after 1991.
