The Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) initiated by the Government of India in the early nineties with the objective of taking the economy along the path of sustained economic growth has had an adverse impact on employment in the organised sector, thus, bringing to the fore the problem of redundancy. In this paper the author succinctly analyses the implications of SAP for the employment and training scenerio in the country. It highlights the need for and importance of strengthening and reorienting training and retraining systems in the context of the challenges and opportunities thrown up by the emerging technology-based environment. - Reproduced |
