Summary, etc. There was a time, not very long ago, when men were considered the sole breadwinners of the family while women assumed the role of docile homemakers. Fast-forwarding to the present era, one can witness the remarkable change that has undergone in the lifestyles of our Indian women. Today, they have proven their mettle in almost every area of development, that was once considered the sole domain of men. This has mainly been possible due to the innumerable opportunities that our education system now provides in enhancing the status of women. In the current article, we are presented with a case study from Satara district in Maharashtra, where people's participation - especially the Panchayat, Mahila Mandals, School teachers and others - played an important role in the Total Literacy Campaign, and helped improve the educational status of the rural women. According to the author, all this would not have been possible without the active support rendered by the women themselves.
