Pursuing justification of the current demand of substituting `rights-orientation' of people in India by `duty-orientation' regarding Constitutional provisions for obvious reasons, the author focuses on media's role and responsibility therein. Covering all components of media, he first mentions their present negative role with a critique on freedom of communication, as perceived by the media, and then discusses in detail media's role in promoting and protecting national and human rights; significance of restrictions, responsibilities, codes of conducts, etc., on rights to bring about desired social change; fundamental duties implicit in Indian Constitution and the strategies for their implementation; media's role towards promoting nationalism, culture, values, etc. Before concluding, he prescribes certain priority areas to which media must pay prompt attention. - Reproduced |
