| Summary, etc. |
Public sector has assumed not only an important role in the country's industrialisation process by providing raw materials and infrastructure, but also played an important role in promoting exports. The Industrial Policy Statement of July 1991, envisaged the disinvestment of a part of the government shareholdings in selected public enterprises to provide market discipline and to improve their performance. However, it is pertinent to have a fresh look at various factors responsible for the declining performance of some of the PSUs before disinvesting the government shareholding in these enterprises which still hold some promise. An attempt has been made here to study the importance and role of public enterprises in country's exports and to evaluate the impact of disinvesting in these enterprises. - Reproduced |
