The paper explores the changing trends and determinants in spousal age difference and its effect on fertility behaviour in India. The analysis using data from the Census of India and National Family Health Survey IV revealed that spousal age gap is narrowing in India. The regional analysis shows that the spousal age gap is lower in the north-central region compared to the southern region of India. Multiple Classification Analysis revealed that the age at marriage, education, wealth index and region are the most significant predictors of spousal age gap in India. Mean children ever born decreases with the increasing age at marriage and increasing spousal age gap. It is also evident that there is an inverse relationship between spousal age gap and age at first birth. The results of Life Table analysis revealed that the interval between marriage to first birth is longer when spousal age gap is lower. Reproduced |
