Summary, etc Vide 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976 inserted Article 39-A in the Constitution of India obligating the State to “provide free legal aid, by suitable legislation or schemes or in any other way, to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disability”. It is in this context that a comprehensive law was enacted in 1987 - Legal Services Authorities Act 1987. This has led to the setting up of Legal Services Authorities at the National, State and District levels along with Legal Services Committees at the Supreme Court, High Court and the Taluka levels. The aim has been to increase the outreach and quality of legal services with a view to bring justice to the doorstep of those who are vulnerable. – Reproduced
