Summary, etc The traditional system of employee relations in many countries of the world was based on the traditional British model of adversarial relationship of collective bargaining. Each organisation under system of collective bargaining, develop its own structures to deal with Employee Union and Associations. However, during the last few years, the accent has been gradually shifting from adversarial to cooperative approaches. This has resulted in gradual shift from adversarial, legal and welfare approach to viewing employee relations and human resource function as a tool for development of the total human resources in the organisation to meet the global competitive environment. The rapid technological changes have also necessitated this. Thus the changing national and international scenario as well as the competitive pressures is forcing the organisations as well as the Government to have a re-look to entire gamete of Employee Relations keeping in mind the emerging issues and challenges. The paper deals with the traditional system of Employee Relations and the recent emerging trends in terms of giving a new direction to employee relation system where the focus shifts from adversarial to cooperative model.
