The Indian Army draws its ethos from the philosophy and beliefs of the society that it serves and of which, it is an integral part. It draws its vigour and vitality from the deep sources of strength that has moulded successive generations of soldiers from India’s ancient past. No people or race, however, can remain unchanged with the passage of time. Great leaders like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, Samudragupta, Shivaji, Ranjit Singh, Krishna Deva Raya, Guru Nanak and Mahatma Gandhi, to name a few, realised that change is inevitable but that it must be for the better. Both, ancient and modern values have shaped the ethos and the moral code of the Indian Army which is an amalgam of diverse philosophies, traditions and beliefs drawn from the rich tapestry of histories, myths and cultures of the various races that make up India’s heterogeneous whole. – Reproduced
