Livestock is an important component of agricultural diversification and income enhancement for the rural masses. The contribution of livestock sector to GSDP in India is estimated at 4.31 percent in 2017-18. State of Assam is rich in livestock resource, which includes cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat and pig. In the 20th Livestock Census, 2019, the livestock population of Assam is 18.04 million. Assam has the highest numbers of pig’s production among the Indian states with a share of 23.18 percent in 2019. In the production of cattle and goat, Assam occupies 8th and 11th rank, respectively. In spite of having huge livestock resources and ample potentiality as growth engine, the state has the lowest per capita availability of livestock products. According to 20th Livestock Census, 2019, Assam produced only 0.45 percent of total milk produced in India with per capita availability of 71 gram/day against 394 gram/ day for all India. Per capita availability of meat in Assam is only 1.50 kg/annum against 6.18 kg/annum for all India. As against this, the normative requirement of meat is reported to be 11 kg per annum, indicating a significant demand-supply gap. In this paper, an attempt has been made to highlight the current status of livestock sector in Assam, challenges confronted by this sector and to suggest workable strategies for better growth of this sector. – Reproduced |
