Summary, etc Growth in poultry sector due to various measures implemented in the country led to the export of processed egg and poultry products. Although many efforts in various segments of value chain have been made to increase export of poultry products from India, still, India’s share in global trade is minimal. This paper is an attempt to understand the pattern of domestic production and export, and constraints - both domestic and export (SPS and TBT) hampering exports. The paper heavily relied on reports and published data. Interrupted Time Series for Analysis for Single Series was attempted to examine the post-level change in egg production and availability. Eggs and broilers production have been rising at a rate of 8-10 percent per annum and broiler meat production at a rate of 7-8 percent. The growth in poultry industry has led India to become fifth largest egg producer and eighteenth largest producer of broilers in the world. India’s export has been steadily increasing over the period to meet the growing global demand. India has comparative advantage in eggs (dried), eggs (in shell), hen and egg liquids. Major items exported are table eggs, egg powder, hatching eggs, SPF eggs, live birds and poultry meat. The SPS and TBT measures of various countries clearly reveal that the product quality and safety issues are now of paramount importance not only to promote poultry exports but also to save the domestic markets from the onslaught of imported poultry products owing to open market access and trade liberalization policies. Thus, to retain the overseas markets and improve the country’s share in the global market, the focus should be on value addition and quality by undertaking appropriate measures at various levels so that the products exported are of international standards. – Reproduced
