Summary, etc In Mao and Markets, Christopher Marquis and Kunyuan Qiao argue that the ideas of the revolutionary commander and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Mao Zedong, along with his major actions, left an enduring imprint on Chinese society, economy, and politics. Marquis has written extensively about imprinting, starting with his dissertation research (e.g., Marquis, 2003) and continuing throughout his career (e.g., Marquis and Tilcsik, 2013), so it is not surprising that imprinting theory is the lens that he and his coauthor bring to bear on China’s political economy. Imprinting theory is well chosen because it brings into sharp focus often misunderstood differences between China’s market-based but authoritarian political economy and the political economies of Western capitalist democracies.
