This article evaluates the impact of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on rural women in Mandi District, Himachal Pradesh, situating the scheme within broader debates on social policy and rural development. PMUY, launched in 2016, aimed to provide free LPG connections to women from below-poverty-line households, thereby reducing dependence on traditional biomass fuels. The study highlights how access to clean cooking fuel has improved health outcomes, reduced drudgery, and enhanced the dignity of rural women. It also examines challenges such as affordability of refills, sustained usage, and awareness gaps that limit the scheme’s long-term effectiveness.
