520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Rationalisation of workforce is an integral part of the structural adjustment process. Many of the enterprises have opted for up-dating of technology for achieving competitiveness. The process is, however, incomplete as there is still overmanning. Some of the enterprises resorted to shedding of labour through VRS but in the context of mounting unemployment the response was not very high. There have been suggestions from many quarters for designing a scientific strategy for rationalisation of workforce with a human face. Based on the findings of a number of research studies conducted by the Shri Ram Centre and supplemented by the deliberations in a recently-held Tripartite Workshop jointly organised by the Shri Ram Centre and the Confederation of Indian Industries in New Delhi, a Model Strategy has been attempted and discussed in the article. - Reproduced.
