| Summary, etc | The United States is between scripts. For roughly four decades, the free-market ethos championed by President Ronald Reagan drove economic policy and pervaded American culture. A broad bipartisan consensus assured Americans that the markets knew best: they were not just efficient, but wise and fair. The state, the thinking went, should not encroach on the natural order produced by the churning of free-market forces. And the state did not. Between 1982 and 2015, the market capitalization of all publicly traded companies went from around 35 percent of GDP to roughly 95 percent.
