| Summary, etc |
CLMV countries started their economic liberalisation policies in the 1990s. This was reflected in their membership of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. China's economic success since its economic liberalisation in the 1970s acted as an inducement for CLMV to deepen their engagements with it. The bilateral linkages between CLMV and China has both economic and strategic aspects to it. These aspects have several interlinkages with the CLMV subregion when viewed with respect to China's strategic interests. Within the existing strategic scenario of the CLMV subregion, paper argues that Chinese economic engagements have clear strategic motives. The paper analyses various forms of economic engagements during the period 2000-2020 such as trade, debt and investments. Impact of the nature of economic engagement on the host country and China is also studied. The paper concludes that these economic engagements have acted as a leverage to fulfil Chinese strategic goals in economic and security domains. - Reproduced |
