In the vast annals of human history, democracy stands as a profound testament to the evolution of collective governance and societal progress. However, the conventional narrative often focuses on the Western origins of democratic principles, overlooking the rich and intricate tapestry of political thought that permeates other civilizations. This paper endeavours to explore the origin and essence of democracy within the context of Bharatiya political thought. Rooted in the ancient and diverse philosophical traditions of Bharat, the genesis of democracy in this region can be traced back to antiquity. Through an in-depth examination of primary texts, classical treatises, and historical accounts, the paper tries to understand the inherent democratic underpinnings that have shaped Bharatiya society across millennia. From the teachings of Vedas and the deliberations in ancient assemblies to the notions of Dharma and Raja Dharma, this paper unveils the multifaceted dimensions of democracy as envisioned by Bharatiya visionaries. This also encompasses the crossroads where indigenous democratic principles intersected with the socio-political changes. As invasions, colonialism, and modernity ushered new dynamics into the subcontinent, the resilience of Bharatiya democratic thought persisted, adapting to the challenges of each era. This study also discusses about the intricate interplay between spiritual values, social harmony, and political governance, this paper strives to enhance our understanding of democracy's universal appeal. The Bharatiya perspective offers a unique lens through which we can contemplate the collective pursuit of justice, inclusivity, and equality – the very essence of democratic ideals and debunk western perspective used over Indian political traditions.- Reproduced |
