| Summary, etc | Dr B.R. Ambedkar is a leading figure in the modern Indian sociopolitical scenario. His contribution to the Indian Constitution is well recognised. His socio-economic thoughts and their contribution to the amelioration of various sections of society have also been widely discussed. Several auteurs have made films dealing with his life and times, trying to portray his persona on celluloid. Other films have depicted his ideas concerning Buddhism and social justice. Considering the development of the academic study of cinema, this article’s goal is to examine how Dr Ambedkar and his views have been portrayed in film. The films showcase the struggles and ultimate victory of Dr Ambedkar in the pursuit of his objectives. The article also looks at how cinema strives to replicate his experiences in the greater political arena and how his life became an inspiration for so many generations. Some of the films explored in this article include Bhim Garjana (‘Bhim’s Roar’, 1990, Marathi); Balak Ambedkar (‘Child Ambedkar’, 1991, Kannada); Dr Ambedkar (1992, Telugu); Yug Purush Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (1993, Marathi); Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar: The Untold Truth (2000, English–Hindi bilingual); Dr B.R. Ambedkar (2005, Kannada); Periyar (2007, Tamil); Ramabai Bhimrao Ambedkar (2010, Marathi); Bole India Jai Bhim (2016, Marathi); Bal Bhimrao (‘Child Bhimrao’, 2018, Marathi); and Jai Bhim (‘Victory to Bhim’, 2021, Tamil). These films will be examined from a historical perspective and analysed in an appropriate context.- Reproduced https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/00195561251336300 |
