Summary, etc Entering public service is highly competitive in Sri Lanka, like in many other countries in the region. Apart from selecting the apex corps of administrative service, a major segment of public and semi-government employees is appointed by political officers. Hence, securing a public service career is regarded as a credit to preserve social status, employment security and stability. This type of socially constructed perception is highly symptomatic in Sri Lankan society. Therefore, this study investigates the problem of how socially constructed perceptions of public service motivation determine the effect in shaping their work performance. This research was conducted using qualitative research methods, and a thematic analysis was employed in analysing the empirical data. The results showed that socially constructed perceptions of Sri Lankan public service significantly affect the motivation of employees to enter the public service, yet it is rather difficult to find any positive impact on their work performance. Given the considerable influence of social perceptions on public service motivation, it is necessary to reshape prevailing social narratives to emphasise the core purpose of serving the public rather than pursuing social status through public sector employment. The results of the study provide valuable insights for policymakers regarding public service recruitment and performance evaluations, which are fundamentally questioned in terms of effectiveness and the quality of service provided.- Reproduced
