Summary, etc. Among the developing countries poverty is a pervasive phenomenon in Bangladesh. Mainly, poverty explained by inadequate resources, lack of skill, inadequate technology and capital for development of resources, lack of motivation, deprivation of fruits of labour, exploitation and the like. Poverty, disease, malnutrition and unemployment are acute in Bangladesh. In social science parlance, various disciplines like economics, sociology, political science and psychology focus on poverty in different ways. Social psychologists suggest that physical quality of living and perceived economic status as more pragmatic and relevant indicators of poverty. Structural changes are a must to improve the condition of the poor. Hence, a strategy for poverty alleviation using a multi-disciplinary approach has been suggested. A programme has been devised for the rural poor which includes: (i) target group selection, (ii) education, (iii) health, (iv) savings, (v) self-employment (A multi-sectoral approach), (vi) social reconstruction and social action. Explanations and operationalisation for the above programme strategies are developed and related matters are discussed in this paper. In conclusion, economic development and related poverty alleviation consequences are examined through successful implementation of the suggested programme and strategies. - Reproduced.
