The natural disasters, i.e. floods and droughts in India are the two dies of the same coin. Both are the direct consequences of the erratic nature of the monsoon rainfall. The various multi-purpose projects, e.g. Hirakud Dam, Damodar system and Bhakra Dam have helped not only in reducing the fury of floods but also in mitigating the drought condition through irrigation in the country. The recent effort initiated by Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India for an inter-basin linkage of rivers to manage floods and droughts simultaneously as a part of National Water Grid is a viable option for water management system in the country. In view of the authors, the conservation of rainwater is the only main key for success in the field of water resources management. This may be achieved by conservation and utilisation of rainwater. - Reproduced. |
