The magnitude of water quality problems of chemical nature force serious health hazards mainly to the rural population in the water scarce regions. Excessive withdrawl of groundwater, industrial activity and presence of high levels of sub-soil minerals contribute to this situation. The article discusses the issue of groundwater pollution occurring as a result of agricultural, industrial, mining and brackish water. It gives details of various pollutants, their chemical properties and ill-effects an man and nature. Few suggestions have been made to mitigate this threat by adopting appropriate technologies. - Reproduced.
