Like 'development' 'social development' too has several connotations and is often used very broadly to refer to improvements in human well-being. It is also used to refer to development that is not strictly economic or market driven. It includes improvements in the quantity and equality of public social services, such as education, health, sanitation, access to clean water and other goods and services that are to be provided to all people by public institutions. But "Social Development" in the Indian context implies poverty alleviation and reduction in income inequalities. The Indian plans, however, have not paid the required attention to these objectives. India still has the largest number of illiterate people in the world. In terms of quality of life of the people, India is among the few lowest ranking countries in the world. - Reproduced. |
