This paper examines the urbanization pattern at the all-India level and also discusses the pattern of concentration of population in the cities, metropolises and mega cities. A large number of new towns as well as declassified ones are recorded for various reasons on the eve of every census. We examine here the state level pattern of the emergence of new towns as also of the declassified ones. The impact of twin phenomenon on the level of urbanization is examined. The paper then decomposes the urban growth into its components to discern the pattern at the national and state levels. Finally, the paper brings out future implications of the present growth pattern. - Reproduced. |
