Consumers prefer the modern retail formats for the convenience, the enhanced shopping experience and the huge discounts that the modern retail stores offer. Currently, organized retail has a ready market mainly in categories like grocery and apparel. the fear for the future of the millions of small time retailers is the reason the sector has not been opened fully to FDI. But the government, having realized the growing interest of multinational retailers and the employment generation potential that the sector holds, as also with an eye an enhancing the competitiveness of a largely unorganized retail industry, has taken bold step towards liberalizing the Indian retail sector.
