Indian Journal of Public AdministrationSummary: With a brief conceptual background on the approach of integrated rural development (IRD), the author, in a comparative perspective, examines the thrust of IRD followed in government sponsored programmes in four South Asian nations - Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka which, incidentally, had common historical roots - to show their commonalities and variances. With a critique on all the four IRD systems, he highlights weaknesses and strong points of each followed by a 9-point assessment on lessons to be learnt. - Reproduced
