ISDA JournalSummary: The Social Reform Movements which arose in the various castes and communities of Kerala by the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century represent an important point of transition in the destructuration of the former system characterised by fuedal values. The hierarchical caste structure had become the dominant element in the social ensemble since it was responsible for the relations of production. The ownership of the `tool' of production, and its employment depended on caste belonging. In turn these relative positions in the order of production reinforced the ladder of social status. - Reproduced
