American Review of Public AdministrationSummary: Advances in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are leading to a new level of computing in which systems will have the capability to act as autonomous agents and learn to learn independently, assess their environment, and think with values, motives, and emotions. Reflection on the dialogue in the AI literature and implications for public administration raises issues concerning a number of classic dilemmas relevant to administrative discretion, including responsiveness, judgement, and accountability. After a brief overview of the AI field to provide context, this article addresses each of these themes in turn and concludes with a summary discussion on the potential benefits and dangers of AI for the field of public administration. - Reproduced
