Journal of Rural DevelopmentSummary: Rural Non-Farm Sector (RNFS) comprises a number of activities, other than agriculture. These are manufacturing, mining and quarrying, construction, trade and commerce, transport, and other services. Individually, these are important in themselves as well as in relation to each other, though manufacturing and processing is regarded as the centrepiece. The paper, in the first part, analyses the trends in RNFS employment in terms of its components for all-India and Andhra Pradesh for 1981 and 1991 based on the census data. Position of various states in RNFS employment in total rural main workers is also indicated along with the decennial change. Specific activities are grouped based on 1981 data as high share, high growth and emergent sub-sectors. The paper also reviews disbursement of NABARD refinance for NFS for all-India and Andhra Pradesh, and presents the state-wise picture for a five-year period upto 1995-96. In the second part of the paper, directions and thrust of policy interventions for the future for RNFS are highlighted. - Reproduced
