Indian Journal of Public AdministrationSummary: Seeing contracting out of public services and programmes as an in-thing, the author cautions that while some of government activities can not be privatised for reasons of safety/security, in others one has to watch out to ensure existence of proper spirit of competition to preserve public interest. On the basis of experience in USA, he then elaborates on dangers that threaten public interest in the form of `Low Balling', cartelisation, privatising without a proper comparative cost study and monitoring of results, and ignoring social values and costs.
