Cropping pattern agriculture sector in Punjab state: a temporal analysis

To the objective, certain analytical techniques Viz, average annual compound growth rates, relative shares of different crops, various concentration/diversification, Indices viz, Herfindahi, Simpson and entropy indices were applied on the data compiled from various issues of statistical abstract of Punjab. The findings from the study concluded that during study period, major crops grown were wheat, rice and cotton, Moreover, increasing trend in the Herfindahi and entropy index points out towards the dominance of conventional cropping pattern in the state, which is a serious matter of concern. Thus, there is dire need to shift to new production profile for sustainable agricultural development. - Reproduced
