Employers’ perception of labour performance: A study from the in-migration context of Kerala

In the background of rapid in-migration in Kerala and increasing employment of migrant workers, it is important to analyze and compare the performance of migrant and native workers in the working environment. Therefore, this paper examines the performance of migrant and native workers from employers’ perspective based on certain performance indicators. The study is based on the primary data collected from 432 employers/owners from construction, manufacturing and hotel/restaurant sectors. The sample was selected from three districts of Kerala namely, Kollam from south Kerala, Ernakulam from central and Kozhikode from north Kerala. Multistage stratified random sampling technique was used to select the sample for the study. The study found that while considering the performance level of migrant and native workers, in majority cases migrant workers perform better than natives. The study also found that there is a significant sector-wise variation in the workplace performances of migrants and natives. In this study employers in all the three sectors have a unanimous opinion that migrant workers are better in workplace performance and therefore, preferable for employment. - Reproduced
