Census of India follows demographic criteria to define urban spatial forms in India. There are definitional problems in applying this criterion in the country as a whole in a uniform manner. Kerala is one among the states which has been experiencing a definitional problem since 1961 census. The present paper tries to investigate the suitability of the definition of urban given by the Census of India 2011 in Kerala context. To delineate the typology of settlement, a sample survey has been conducted among the households in both urban and rural areas of two districts of South Kerala. Data have been collected from 400 sample households through interview method. Discriminant analysis has been used to classify the rural – urban characteristics based on 9 indicators. It is found that access to basic amenities, life style and mode of transport are better indicators in discriminating spatial characteristic and all other 6 indicators are incapable to delineate the typology of settlement in the region. Rural urban difference is blurred in the region and hence a correct classification of rural and urban is required to design an appropriate framework for implementing development programmes through local self-governments in the context of speedy urban transformation in the State. – Reproduced
