By: Varshney, Hemant Kumar and Awasthi, I.C.
Material type: materialTypeLabelBookPublisher: IASSI Quarterly: Contributions to Indian Social Science Description: 39(4), Oct-Dec, 2020: p.598-616. In: IASSI Quarterly: Contributions to Indian Social ScienceSummary: The Human Development Reports have revealed that Karnataka has performed well in terms of Human Development Index (HDI) and Gender Development Index (GDI) and Literacy Development Index (LDI). However, the existence of sharp socio-economic disparities among the districts is a matter of concern. This paper attempts to analyse the inter-district progress of women's literacy vis-a-vis men's in Karnataka and the disparity between them. Using the literacy data available from the Census, the inter-district gender disparity in terms of Tilak's disparity index has been examined for the years 2001 and 2011. Overall growth in literacy has been observed across all sections of society. Significant improvement in female literacy has helped in reducing gender disparity in literacy rates which is evident at district level analysis showing more than 90 per cent equality in some districts. Similar trends have been observed in the case of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes; though the analysis for these social groups is limited to the State level. However, Literacy Development Index highlights that this development has not changed the relative ranks of the districts on the literacy map of Karnataka. It is evident from the empirical data that disparity is inversely correlated to literacy rates. Reproduced
