Socio economic challenges faced by the rag pickers at Lucknow city

The purpose of this study was to investigate the socio-economic conditions of rag pickers. This research was carried out with four hundred rag pickers comprising of both male and female participants. Multistage random sampling technique was adopted in the research. The data has been collected from the rag pickers engaged in Lucknow city. SES scale developed and standardised by Kuppuswamy (2019) has been used to assess their socio economic status. A self-structured interview schedule was also used for gathering other information related to the occupatiWon. The data was coded and analysed using IBM SPSS 20.0 Version. Simple percentage and frequency has been used for analysis. The study revealed that the rag pickers are very important for the society but their socio-economic condition is one of the worst. From the following study, it was seen that a majority of the rag pickers were poor, illiterate, lived in bad conditions and needed the government to fulfil many requirements such as free medical facilities, fresh and clean water, social safety, good sanitation and rehabilitation to other jobs. – Reproduced
