The Journal of GovernanceSummary: I am delighted and privileged to deliver the Second Sardar Patel Lecture on Governance. I am deeply conscious of the tremendous responsibility I have to shoulder in accepting this honour of speaking on a subject relevant to governance, and in memory of one of the most illustrious sons of this country. The maiden lecture in this series was delivered by no less a person than Sri Venkaiah Naidu, our esteemed Vice President, who had a long and illustrious career in governance in various capacities. It is therefore fair to question whether someone whose career has been steeped in science has the authority to speak on matters of governance. Before accepting the invitation to follow in such hallowed footsteps, I myself pondered this question very carefully. – Reproduced
