This study focuses on the role of women in the agrarian struggles of North Malabar, in the present state of Kerala. “Though women played an important part in these, little attenuation has been paid to their crucial rule and struggles in the written histories of tenant struggles against landlords in the traditional agrarian system, women’s labour comprised a substantial part of agricultural labour input, especially in the north Malabar region, which, which was the centre of sustained struggles of the verumpattakar or tenths. The extensive participation of women labourers n these agrarian struggles throws up several question. North Malabar is a region where women’s activism stagyed alive even after the 1940s, and where women’s organizations have had a mass following from then to the present day. In this region, where radical and national politics took deep roots and wields considerable influence even to this day, these linkage need further exploration. – Reproduced
